WEEK 2:

For Mr Fauzis class, we had to find some magazines and newspapers and other things like that, cut them up and try to make a good composition using those objects. We did this as a way to prepare ourselves for our project which will need us to understand composition better.

Figure 1: Composition 1

Figure 1.1: Composition 2

Figure 1.2: Composition 3

FEEDBACK:

Comp 1: Looks okay, but it doesn't have good flow, it feels very separate and distant to each other.

Comp 2: Doesn't really work well because there isn't one subject that you can really focus on, there is so much going on that it doesn't really have a main subject.

Comp 3: The best one, has a better harmony with the objects and a clear main subject.

WEEK 3:

LECTURE:

Blending modes and double exposure. Double exposure merges two images together, it can be done in photoshop with some practice. There are many types of double exposure shots but my favourite one shown was the tilt shift exposure shot. This was the picture shown in the lecture:

A double-exposed photo of a female model

There are many blending modes in photoshop but they are all separated into small groups that do roughly the same thing but with slightly different effects. The groups being:
  • Normal
  • Darken
  • Lighten
  • Contrast
  • Inversion
  • Cancellation
  • Component
But the most commonly used blending modes are Multiply (Darkening), Screen (Lightening) Overlay and Soft Light (Both Contrast)

Now we have to do a digital collage utilising the blending modes and double exposure knowledge we got from the lecture. We have to use the 10 images given to us by Mr Fauzi.

FEEDBACK:

Comp 1: It looks interesting but the persons silhouette interferes with the composition as a whole.

Comp 2: Looks better than the first one, blending modes were used well. Backgrounds are all a little plain among the 3 though.

Comp 3: Not too sure what's going and doesn't really have a proper main subject. Feels a little messy and doesn't work cohesively enough.

WEEK 4:

Lecture:  Match lighting, Adjustment layers and filters.

Adjustment layers are useful because they allow you to alter the image to your pleasing without changing the original image itself. You can change the colour, contrast and much more using these layers and won't change the original image at all.

WEEK 5:

Exposure, Aperture, Shutter speed and ISO.

Exposure: Exposing the image sensor to light. If a photo has too much light in it, it would be over exposed.

Aperture: Controls the brightness, it is the f number. The higher the number, the darker the image.

Shutter: Amount of time the shutter is open. If the time is short, the image sensor is exposed to less light which will result in a darker image.

ISO: Camera setting that increases or lowers the amount of light in a photograph. Natural light is better, but darker conditions will mean you need higher ISO.

WEEK 6:

We had to continue doing the digital collage except, we had to use photos of ourself and were given a couple more photos to work with for the piece. I did a few utilising many blending modes.

After this task, we worked on our Project 2A, The Self Portrait: Self Portrait
