INSTRUCTIONS:

Project 3 // E-Zine & Instagram Page

For our final output, we have decided upon creating a zine about Lefkaritika. We plan to teach our audience about the history and a simple embroidery craft they can attempt on their own. We divided the work among the group members like so:
  • Layout - Meiling & Fazal
  • Illustration - Tze Earn
  • Miwi - Copywriting
  • Aisyah & Jon - Editorial
Here is the initial sketch of the zine we had during the ideation process done by myself, along with the illustration style that we will be following which was done beautifully by Tze Earn.

Firstly, Miwi & Jon organised the contents of the zine so that Meiling and I could begin our layout designs as we need to know how to place all of the information on the page. Here is all of the zine content below:

After which, we all went on Milanote and created a mood board for our zine including different fonts, colours and zine layouts we felt were appropriate:

After creating our mood board, Meiling & I got started on our layout designs. Using my knowledge from Advanced Typography (Thanks Mr Vinod), I started by choosing a few typographical systems that I could use as guides for my section. Meiling took the beginning sections 1 - 5, and I took 6 - 8. Our initial ideation for the layouts was a little inconsistent between the two of us.

After discussing a bit more and teaching Meiling a little bit about typographical layouts it ended up looking much more consistent. I mainly used the modular system for my layouts along with bilateral in one page. I felt modular would fit the geometric nature of the Lefkaritika well. Here is the final layout:

After receiving some feedback, we also decided to create an Instagram page spreading awareness about Lefkaritika to our audience, as most of them participated in the survey from social media we felt it would make sense to create a page about it. Social media also has a great reach to a very wide audience so we felt it would help introduce this craft to many people. Here is the social media page ideation done by Meiling:

After this, Miwi and Meiling created an Instagram feed with the colours and designs from the layout prototype in Figure 1.9. They created a prototype of how the feed should look before they posted it all on Instagram. Tze Earn had also created an Instagram filter inspired by Lefkaritika designs.

Jon & Aisyah finished editing the zine and bringing the whole thing together, which was run through Tze Earn who finished it off and created the proper E-Zine with animation as well.

FEEDBACK:

Week 7: Try to extend our final outcome to a wider audience through online means like social media for our target audience.

REFLECTION:

Experience: This whole module was really difficult as it required a lot of research and finding information on a rather scarce topic. We really struggled during the initial few weeks of this module, it felt very all over the place. But thankfully it was just a struggle at the beginning which allowed us to have smooth sailing afterwards. My group members were all amazing and very cooperative. We could always voice our opinions and ideas without feeling uncomfortable. Everything went very smoothly, thanks to Tze Earn especially as she was such a great group leader. When everyone was feeling confused she was always level-headed and managed to guide us to the end.

Observation: This project has really opened my eyes to the world of culture in general. Not just our own project, but through the other groups as well. Observing their presentations were also very enlightening as I learn about different cultures and sub-cultures I had previously not been aware of. I have also learned so much about Cyprus and Lefkara lace. It is such a beautiful craft, and the people are so passionate about it. It really made me excited to be able to find such an amazing craft (Thanks Meiling!!) and be able to possibly share it with my friends and family.

Findings: One of the main findings I have made was that every single country has such a rich and unique culture. During our ideation process before we had landed on Lefkara and Lefkaritika, we looked into multiple different cultures and countries. All of which had such deep and unique cultures, such as the Maori people. Another interesting finding I had made was how unique and intricate Lefkaritika is. It has so many motifs and designs, it feels like we have barely scratched the surface about their culture. It can only truly be experienced by growing up around it and being taught at a young age. Sadly, this is impossible as stated by many of the locals, and due to this, we hope our efforts may help it last even just a little bit longer.
