Project 2 Data Collection

INSTRUCTIONS:

WEEK 4 - WEEK 5 // DATA COLLECTION

For the data collection, we have a multitude of methods. Starting with Tze Earn, she had done a Google Street and Earth View of Lefkara and observe the local streets and buildings. Along with finding some local lace shops there.

A few notable observations made by Tze Earn were:

  • They use a lot of light ultramarine blue in the exterior (buildings walls, windows, door) and interior (ceilings of Holy Cross church, & cafes)
  • Colours: Terracotta, Light Ultramarine Blue
Aisyah had done some YouTube video analysis. Here are some of the links to the videos that we have found:
Miwi had managed to find a book about how to make Lefkara lace in Greece and translated it with the help of the group members. The data was rather inaccurate, or at least we couldn't validate whether the translations were correct. Thankfully, Tze Earn had contacted KOED (Cyprus Society for Education Through Arts), who were extremely kind enough to give us a document entailing to how to create a simple bookmark with the Lefkaritka technique. Here is the document:

Next, I did the questionnaire and analysis of the information with Jon. Using past questionnaires we had designed in our second semester as a reference, we designed one for this project.

We asked a few simple questions about the demographics, along with their interests in the craft and whether they have even heard about it. Along with a question on their favourite design that we would later use on our zine design hopefully. Here is a link to the questionnaire: Cyprus & Lefkara Lace Questionnaire

After we collected 167 responses, Jon and I analysed the data to try and identify some patterns and what would be the best option for our final outcome. Here is the analysed data in the form of a Powerpoint presentation:

We also had a zoom interview with Madam Julia Astreou, a textile designer from Cyprus. Meiling had contacted her and set up an interview time on 07/02/21.

Madam Julia was very kind to us and gave us really insightful information four our project. She was very helpful and also told us about a few things that we had after the interview, Jon and I transcribed it into a Google Doc. Here it is below:

After which we had finished our data collection and compiled it into a Google Slide format.

FEEDBACK:

Week 5: Good job on the data collection, it is very in-depth.

REFLECTION:

Experience: The experience for the project is very familiar to me. It feels like we're in Design Research & Methodology all over again, except somehow the deadline is even tighter. Thankfully with the great leadership skills from Tze Earn and the cooperation of everyone in the group, our work went extremely smoothly and we got plenty of amazing information.

Observation: I have learned so much about Cyprus and Lefkara specifically. It is a really beautiful place and the Lefkara lace is so intricate and amazing to learn about. I was initially a little hesitant on learning about this but I am very glad to be apart of this project.

Findings: The interview with Madam Julia was extremely helpful, she was a really interesting and wonderful person to talk to. I learned so much about Lefkaritika and the threats it is facing. Madam Julia was a very passionate soul to talk to, it is clear she was very excited to share the craft and her knowledge with us. I hope that this project will help Lefkaritika in some sort.
