INSTRUCTIONS

Task 2 // Devise and produce design management protocols relevant with industry practice.

WEEK 6:

We have now moved onto creating a user journey map for Extrash on Miro. Kyra was the one who worked on this as a UI/UX student she is more familiar with these sort of researching methods. We also had created a Gant chart similarly to the business students to organise our members and tasks more efficiently.

Figure 1: User Journey Map

Kyra had created the first version of the application prototype on Figma, she also had to create a drivers side UI on request of the computing team.

Jon and I had also begun roughly sketching out the character design ideas based on our inspirations from Pinterest. We were aiming for cute and easy to understand characters based on simple geometric shapes.

Figure 1.5: Rough character ideation done by myself

Using these as inspiration, Jon and I had created both our own sketches and variations of the character ideas. However, we received feedback from Mr Mike that our characters had no sense of direction currently and to add more meaning. Look into our past research and make sure it is relevant. We also presented the logo designs created by Hanbo in our preliminary design draft shown below.

Consultation Notes:

  • Finish up the journey map; touch points need to be rectified

  • We may want to consider physical advertising and not just digital

  • Begin working on brand identity (logo) and art direction for social media content (illustrations, animations, etc)

Next course of action:

(Monday)

  • Finish journey map (Done before Friday)

  • Ask business regarding physical advertising (Done before Friday)

  • Animation students needed to search a 3D interior space model (will be uploaded to Spatial) for the final presentation purpose (Do it before W13)

(Friday)

  • Begin working on brand identity (logo) and art direction for social media content (illustrations, animations, etc)

  • First iteration of low fidelity prototype (Ready to user test)

    • make sure app user tester not lost and can find everything and there isn't too much info

  • carry keywords from problem statement/HMWs into everything we make

  • make sure the logo is unique enough to stand out from the existing logo design in the current market.

WEEK 7:

During this week Cerene and Hanbo had focused on further refinement of the logo design. While Jon and I had to continue working our character designs. As a group we also needed to establish our art direction board to keep consistency in our branding. I was incharge of creating the colour schemes. Here is progression for our logo design done by Cerene and Hanbo:

Kyra had also further progressed with the low fidelity prototype for our application. After some user testing she had identified the main issues and rectified them appropriately. Here is the figma of our V2 Prototype:

Consultation Notes:

  • The logo design and characters are fine.

  • Try and reference animation with similar styles such as "Dumb Ways to Die".

Next course of action:

WEEK 8/WEEK 9

During this week we had shown the progress we had over our self study week. Kyra had created our application style guide which was also used as our art direction. Jon and I had worked on the character designs further, creating shapes with more rationale and colours to match them. I created the sketches in Photoshop after which Jon had made them in Adobe Illustrator.

We were also requested to finish the onboarding illustrations under rather short notice by computing team. I quickly got to work and drew the sketches for each of the onboarding stages, after which Jon had once again used Illustrator to create the vector style characters.

WEEK 10:
During this week, Kyra had completed the high fidelity prototype as requested by the computing team. I worked on the creation of assets for the explainer video along with Jon and Minfeng. Creating the assets themselves was fine and I didn't have much of an issue. I wish I had been a bit stricter with myself in terms of deadlines but I have been rather unwell recently and it has affected my work unfortunately.

Jon and I worked on the assets together, while I did the backgrounds based on what was asked of us by Minfeng.

WEEK 11:

During this week I didn't have the most to do for minor project. Cerene and Farissa were incharge of creating the stickers and Instagram posts respectively. Here are the stickers and Instagram posts done by Cerene and Farissa:

Figure 2.9: Sticker Designs (Done by Cerene)

Figure 3: Sticker Designs (Done by Cerene)

Figure 3.1: Instagram Posts (Done by Farissa)

Consultation Notes:

  • Keep a level of consistency throughout all of the posts and stickers. The stickers are very loud and colourful, while the Instagram posts are much more muted in comparison.

  • Rework the Instagram posts to follow the stickers direction more.

Next course of action:
  • Vote which stickers we prefer the most as a team
  • Fix Instagram posts
  • Continue on towards completing the video

WEEK 12:

This week we showed the progress of our Instagram posts and YouTube explainer video. We were told that the video had a lot of room for improvement from Mr Mike. Jon and I were both also told as Entertainment Design students we need to oversee the video as well from a compositional standpoint and make sure the audience can read it well.

Figure 3.2: Instagram Posts Updated(Done by Farissa)

Consultation Notes:

  • Don't be afraid when critiquing each other. It's strictly professional and we are not trying to be rude, but rather we want to bring the best out of everybody.

  • Rework the video, there are many issues such as timing, colours, framing issues, etc.

  • As entertainment students we need to stay hyper vigilant of framing issues, colours, contrast and other issues.

Next course of action:
  • Rework the explainer video.
  • Overhaul the visuals completely.
  • Divide the video amongst the team rather than one person alone.

After rather harsh feedback, we all called on discord and discussed our next course of action in more depth. Cerene had suggested we layout the video on Miro and add our own individual comments. Along with us watching the video together and figuring out how we could fix all the issues that were mentioned by Mr Mike.

WEEK 13:

Cerene had taken the heavy lifting of organising the video in After Effects along with helping to rehaul the visuals of the video. After which she handed the file over to Jon, Kyra, Min Feng, and myself. We each took different scenes and animated them after which we combined them into the entire video. Hanbo and Cerene worked on the transition scenes between the video as well. Farissa and Cerene had also worked on reworking the Instagram posts once again to further fit our aesthetics/theme.

Figure 3.4: Explanation on new After Effects file + Style Frames (Done by Cerene)

Figure 3.5: Instagram Posts Final (Done by Farissa)

Consultation Notes:

  • Video is much better.

  • The timing can be further improved upon, Mr Mike asked me to assist as mine had the most natural timing.

Next course of action:
  • Fix the timing in some scenes and complete the entire video.
After this session we once again got in discord, Cerene shared her screen and we dissected the video together to see how we can improve it. I didn't want to guarantee my teammates by saying I could complete fixing the videos on my own when I know myself I have been very unwell recently. So we decided to discuss the video together and I pointed out what to fix.

WEEK 14/WEEK 15

We are now in the final stretch, we just need to complete our 3D model in spacial (Cerene) and our final presentation deck to present on December 3rd.

Consultation Notes:

  • The guest lecturers were very happy with what we had to show! They said it was clear and well done, also that we showed the real process that goes into the creation of design well.

Next course of action:
  • Spatial 3D model

REFLECTION:

Week 6: Jon and I had worked on roughly sketching the character designs, however an immediate issue we ran into which was pointed out by Mr Mike was that we have no clear direction. We weren’t using the words and findings we had from the research conducted when creating our designs. Such as keywords based on our research. We hadn’t met up in a while now and it does feel like there is a level of confusion, especially because everything is online it can be difficult to get an update from everybody at times.

Week 7: This week we showed our finalised logo design created by Hanbo and Cerene. Using the logo we will be creating our art direction board including colours, keywords, typefaces, etc. I will be working on creating the colour schemes that we can use. I realise the importance of having an art direction board, as without it there will be extreme levels of confusion along with a lack of consistency.

Week 8: -

Week 9: This week we had to continue working on the characters. Me and Jon worked on it together with me doing the ideation sketching in Photoshop and then Jon would use Illustrator to bring them to life. We also had to finish the onboarding illustrations this week under rather short notice. We were asked if it’d be possible to finish them before the weekend ended (we were asked on Friday). Luckily I managed to sketch all the illustrations out very quickly and Jon created them in Illustrator quickly as well. We also decided on who’s going to be voicing over the video (me!). This week I learned that working under pressure and short notice is a valuable skill to have.
Week 10: During this week I worked on creating the assets for Minfengs video. Using the art direction board I created the different assets and backgrounds. It wasn’t too difficult creating the assets as it was rather simple and I already had a point of reference. But for the creation of the background it was a little difficult because I was only given a very brief outline on what was needed. Luckily it wasn’t too hard either. I learned this week that I should be more strict on deadlines for myself and share my work into the group rather than only to the person I am working with. I am also very grateful to my groupmates for being able to keep up with me as I have definitely slowed down in progress over the weeks.

Week 11: This week I had been generally a bit more free than previous weeks as we had finished working on the assets and art direction board. Now it was mostly the animated video and Instagram content. However, I still learned that consistency and teamwork is very important in group work. As during consultation we realised that the Instagram content and our stickers had no visual consistency and looked completely different from each other. This was because it was done by two different people of course, but I realise that communication is very vital in these projects to reduce the amount of work needing to be redone.

Week 12: This week we focused on redoing the video assets trying to fix it based on the criticism that was pointed out. It was mostly colour adjustments but also creating some new assets for some parts of the video. We also tried to break down the video into a few parts that we will then split up to do as a group rather than Minfeng do everything on his own. Cerene was very critical during this session for which I am really grateful for, her criticism really helped bring the best to the table.

Week 13: The video went over rather well with Mr Mike, just that we need to fix the timing issues that were present in the videos. Mr Mike told me that the scene I animated had the best timing and to help the rest with this issue. We called on discord and did some group criticism on the videos and see what else we could fix together. I am really happy that everyone is very open to criticism and understands that we are doing this as a team and that it is important to criticise. Cerene also did a fantastic job on organising the After Effects files, it was extremely well organised and super easy to understand. She did such a good job on doing a visual overhaul for the video as well.

Week 14: The semester is nearly over! Can’t believe it has flown by so quickly, currently we are just trying to finish everything for our final presentation. Being the presentation deck, our blogs, doing some final touches, etc. With all our other classes also being extremely overwhelming I definitely took a backseat in these weeks as I’m also rather unwell physically which makes it very hard to work as much as I used to in previous semesters. It definitely sucks knowing I could've done more to help the team, but I am glad I was able to contribute as much as I did. Overall, I am so happy to have to have worked with this group, everyone did their parts and did them well. If it wasn’t done well, we were all willing to help and nobody felt like dead weight. Only thing that is rather unfortunate is that we never got to see each other !! I will miss our groups discord discussions that lasted way too long because we were all just complaining :’) Thank you to everyone in this group and I am so glad to have worked with you guys !! Sorry if I couldn’t contribute as much, entertainment feels a little too specialised sometimes haha.
