REFLECTION:

Experiences: When I came into this degree, I really had no idea what typography was. It was very new, I had done the extreme basics of typography during ICT in school. But this was extremely in detail. I really tried my best to understand the subject, watch the lectures and take down notes. I can't act like I was having the time of my life doing this obviously, it got boring and it was hard to pay attention sometimes but I really learned a lot. I wouldn't have known what tracking was, and cross alignment. Such simple things in terms of typography but without them your layouts would look so incorrect. I learned how to use illustrator and indesign as well, I wasn't very familiar with them especially in terms of the work we were doing. Each assignment was something new to learn for me and it was overall a great but most definitely tiring experience.

Observations: I learned that everything in typography is about the nuances and details. The smallest of details can make such huge differences in your work. I also noticed that I actually tend to make rather basic mistakes especially earlier on. I would miss very obvious things and I had to learn to be more critical when observing my typography work. It is a common trend for me to focus on the details rather than the bigger picture and I did end up doing this sometimes but I also did the opposite at times too. I also learned how colours, size and typefaces can add so much impact to your work and the nuances of these working together in harmony is what creates an amazing piece of work. In general I realised everything lies in the details and that they're usually not noticed by the average person, however, if there is a mistake then people will notice.

Findings: I saw that we had to use animation quite a few times in this module. The animations never have to be super flashy and eye catching, enough to completely wow an audience. That is good but it also about expressing what you are trying to express through the text and animation. I also found that typefaces are extremely important, they need to catch a viewers eyes however they can't be too in your face. If they notice the typeface rather than the message itself, then there's an issue. When I was working on the editorial assignment I realised how simplicity in design is not easy. Keep it simple but keeping it interesting is a hard balance, which is why I struggled in that assignment quite a bit. Overall I really learned a lot in this module and hope it will also allow me to improve my design ability in general.
